More than 20 states will increase their minimum wage this year, boosting paychecks for millions of workers as rising costs squeeze household budgets. Both Democratic- and Republican-led states, from California and Washington to Missouri and Nebraska, have hiked their wage floors above the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City’s minimum wage is getting a boost in 2026. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, minimum wage workers in New York City, Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties will receive a 50-cent increase to $17 from $16.50.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, the minimum wage in Michigan for adult workers will be $13.73 per hour, according to the state Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. For minors, the minimum hourly wage will be $11.67, 85% of the standard minimum wage. The tipped minimum wage will be $5.49 an hour, 40% of the standard minimum wage.
Virginians earning minimum wage should see more money in their paychecks after a 36-cent-per-hour increase took effect Thursday. The minimum wage in the commonwealth went from $12.41 per hour to $12.77 per hour.
